Using the 40 second timer

This 40 second timer counts down from 0:40 and rings at zero. Press Start or Space and it begins instantly.

40 seconds on, 20 seconds off

The most common reason to search for a 40 second timer is interval training. A 40/20 format gives you 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest, so each round is exactly one minute. Ten rounds make a 10 minute workout.

You can run one interval at a time here, pressing R and Space between rounds. For a hands-free session, the HIIT timer has a 40/20 × 10 preset with a round counter and 3-2-1 beeps.

The football play clock

American football uses a 40-second play clock after most plays. Coaches and players can use this timer to practice getting a play called and the ball snapped in time. Full screen (F) makes it readable from the field on a tablet.

Other quick uses

  • A plank or wall sit just past the 30 second mark.
  • Answer time in a quiz or debate round.
  • A short rest between strength sets.

FAQ

Can I use a 40 second timer with music?

The timer plays an alarm sound, not music. Play your workout playlist in another app and pick a loud alarm such as Emergency or Bell so you hear it over the music.

Does it keep running if I lock my phone?

If the browser is suspended, the alarm can't play. The timer tries to keep the screen awake while it runs, so leave the page open and the screen on.
