How to use the 20 second timer
This 20 second timer counts down from 0:20 and sounds an alarm when time is up. Press Start (or Space) and it runs immediately.
Three classic 20-second uses
- Handwashing. The CDC recommends scrubbing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds. A timer is a simple way to teach kids how long that really is.
- Tabata. A Tabata round is 20 seconds of hard work followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times.
- Eye breaks. The 20-20-20 rule says every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
It's also handy for a short plank, a quick stretch hold, or a speed round in a game.
Steps
- Choose an alarm sound or mute it.
- Press Start.
- Press R to reset for another round.
When to use a different tool
A single 20 second countdown is fine for one hold. For a full workout, the Tabata timer runs all eight 20/10 rounds for you with a "get ready" countdown and beeps on each change. For screen-time eye breaks, the break timer can suggest a 20-20-20 break.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add music to the 20 second timer?
The timer has alarm sounds, not music. You can play music in another app; the alarm still sounds while this page stays open.
Why does a 20 second timer need to be accurate?
Short timers show small errors more. This one measures time against the system clock rather than counting ticks, so it doesn't drift if the tab is in the background.
