Set Countdown Timer Using Pre-defined Times

How to set the countdown timer

This online countdown timer counts down from any length you choose and plays an alarm when it reaches zero. It opens at 5 minutes; set seconds, minutes or up to 99 hours, pick a sound and press Start.

  1. Click Set Time and fill in hours, minutes and seconds.
  2. Click Set Sound and choose from ten alarms: Beep, Bell, Doorbell, Success, Magic, Guitar, Announce, Emergency, Hailing or Correct.
  3. Press Start. The ring around the time empties as the timer counts down.
  4. Use Pause to stop the clock and Start to continue from the same second.
  5. Press Reset to go back to the full time you set.

When the timer ends, your alarm plays and a "Your Task Is Complete" message pops up.

What you get with this timer countdown

  • Any length. From a 10-second countdown to a 3-hour exam or a 24-hour challenge.
  • Full screen. Make the countdown clock fill the screen for a projector, TV or second monitor.
  • Time in the tab. The remaining time shows in the browser tab title, so you can work in another tab and still glance at it.
  • Screen stays awake. While the countdown runs, the page asks your device to keep the screen on, where the browser supports it.
  • Free and ad-free. No account, no sign-up and no ads covering the clock.

Ways people use a countdown timer

A countdown timer is most useful when you know how long something should take and want a firm signal when it is over:

  • Studying and work sprints. Set 25 or 50 minutes, work until it rings, then take a short break.
  • Classrooms. Time a quiz, a lab station or a "turn and talk." Full screen makes the countdown easy to read from the back row.
  • Meetings and presentations. Give each speaker 5 minutes, or keep a stand-up to 15.
  • Cooking and baking. Rice, pasta, cookies or a resting steak.
  • Workouts. A 1-minute plank or a 20-minute run. For repeating work/rest rounds, an interval timer is a better fit.
  • Games and challenges. Turn limits, speed rounds and "clean your room before the buzzer."

Countdown timer or alarm clock?

Use a countdown when you think in lengths of time: "give me 20 minutes." Use an alarm when you think in clock times: "remind me at 3:15 PM." If a meeting starts at 2:00 PM and you want to stop working 10 minutes before, either works, but the online alarm clock saves you the math.

A quick tip for long countdowns: write down when the timer should end. If you set 1 hour 45 minutes at 1:15 PM, it will ring at 3:00 PM, which is easy to plan the rest of your afternoon around.

Need more than one countdown?

This page runs one countdown at a time. If you need several at once, for example oven, stovetop and rice, or three groups in a classroom, open each timer in its own browser tab and start them separately; every tab keeps its own time and alarm.

Counting down to a date instead?

This tool counts down a length of time, such as 10 minutes or 2 hours. It does not count the days until an event like Christmas, a birthday or a wedding. For a date countdown, use a calendar-based "days until" counter. If your event is today, though, you can work out how many hours and minutes are left and set that here.

Countdown timer FAQ

What is the longest countdown I can set?

The hours field accepts up to 99 hours, plus up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds. For very long countdowns, keep the device plugged in and the page open.

Does the countdown keep going in a background tab?

Yes, it keeps running while the page is open, and the remaining time stays visible in the tab title. The alarm can only sound while the tab is open, so do not close it. On a phone, keep the browser in front for the most reliable alarm.

I don't hear the alarm on my phone. Why?

Many phones, and iPhones in particular, only allow sound after you tap the page. Tap Start yourself, check the phone is not on silent, and turn the volume up.

Can I use a ready-made time?

Yes. Below the timer you will find ready-made timers from 1 second to 100 hours. Each one opens already set to that length, so you only need to press Start.
